Types of Asbestos Survey

Management Survey

The purpose of this survey is to locate as far as reasonably practicable the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos containing materials (ACM) in buildings, including those which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, and including foreseeable maintenance and installation, and to assess its condition. Surveys will often involve minor intrusive work and some disturbance and may involve sampling and analysis to confirm the presence or absence of any ACMs, and can also involve presuming the presence or absence of asbestos.

Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys

These types of surveys are carried out before any intrusive maintenance or repair work, refurbishment or demolition work, plant removal or dismantling etc., is carried out on a building, and is used to locate and describe as far as reasonably practicable, all ACMs in the areas where works are to be carried out. These surveys will be fully intrusive and involve destructive inspection as necessary to gain access to all areas, including those that may be difficult to reach and will involve sampling and analysis to confirm the presence or absence of any ACMs.

All surveys are carried out in accordance with the HSE’s guidance publication HSG 264 (Asbestos: The Survey Guide).
